Borderlands 4 Won’t Cost $80 After All as 2K Confirms Pricing and Pre-Order Details

Weeks after Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford hinted that Borderlands 4 might be priced at $80, 2K has confirmed that won’t be the case. However, the upcoming looter shooter won’t cost the long-violated $60 standard either. The standard version of Borderlands 4 is priced at $70—the new standard pricing for triple-A games on current-generation consoles. The game is available to pre-order now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.

Borderlands confirms pricing and releases

2K announced pricing and pre-order information for Borderlands 4 on Monday, detailing all available versions. The publisher also confirmed that the game’s post-launch content will include story missions and new vault hunters, new map areas, and more.

Borderlands 4 will be available in Standard, Deluxe and Super Deluxe editions on all platforms, priced at $69.99, $99.99 and $129.99 respectively. In India, the three variants are priced at Rs. 3,999 Rs 5,699 and 7,499 respectively for the PC version (via Steam and Epic Games Store). On consoles, the game is priced at Rs. 4,999 and Rs 7,499 respectively.

The Standard Edition comes with the base game, while the Deluxe Edition includes the Bounty Pack Bundle, which includes four post-launch DLC packs, four Vault cards with unique challenges and rewards, new gear and weapons, four new vehicles, Vault Hunter cosmetics, and the Firehawk’s Fury weapon skin. 2K has confirmed that each DLC pack will feature unique areas, new missions, and unique bosses.

The Super Deluxe Edition includes all the benefits of the Deluxe Edition and Vault Hunter Pack, including two new story packs, each with a new Vault Hunter, story, and side quests; two new map areas; new gear and weapons; more Vault Hunter cosmetics; and new ECHO-4 cosmetics. This release also includes the Ornate Order Pack, which contains four additional Vault Hunter skins, four Vault Hunter heads, and four Vault Hunter bodies.

Borderlands 4’s $80 Price Controversy

Last month, Pitchford drew criticism for his response to a user’s comment on X (formerly Twitter) about Borderlands 4’s expected pricing. Gearbox CEO says he has no say in how games are priced, claiming “real fans” are willing to pay $80 for a game.

Pitchford later apologized for his remarks about X, saying: “No one likes to be taken for granted and that was not my intention.”

During a Borderlands 4 panel in May, he further clarified his stance on the game’s pricing. When asked how much the game would cost, he said he didn’t know. “It’s an interesting time, right? To the extent that we have a competitive market, the people who are making these choices (about game pricing) want to sell as many units as possible, and they want to be cautious with price-sensitive people,” Pitchford said.

“So there are some who don’t want to see prices go up, even those who decide prices. And there are those who accept the reality of increasing gaming budgets and tariffs on retail packaging – and it’s getting worse.”

Pitchford confirmed that Borderlands 4’s development budget was more than double that of Borderlands 3.

On Monday, following the Borderlands 4 pre-order and pricing announcement, Pitchford claimed that Borderlands 4 had no price increase — a false statement considering Borderlands 3 is priced at $60. “Big news: Borderlands 4 is not getting a price increase! Instead of the standard edition being $80, it’s $69.99! They’re showing it to you, so show it to them,” he said.

A few years ago, when AAA versions of games on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X crossed the $60 mark and dropped to $70, it sparked discussions about game pricing. The bar was raised even more recently when Nintendo announced that Mario Kart World, a first-party launch game for the Nintendo Switch 2, would be priced at $80.

Last month, Microsoft announced it would be raising the price of its Xbox consoles, confirming that the price of some of its first-party games would rise from $70 to $80 this holiday season. At the Xbox Game Showcase on June 8, the company announced that its upcoming triple-A first-party role-playing game The Outer Worlds 2 will be priced at $80.

Borderlands 4 will launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on September 12, with a Switch 2 version coming later this year.
