Boopie Miller posts double-double as SMU beats No. 12 North Carolina 97-83 in its ACC opener

DALLAS (AP) — Boopee Miller had 27 points and 12 assists and Southern Methodist University beat No. 12 North Carolina 97-83 on Saturday, the Broncos’ first win over a ranked team under second-year coach Andy Enfield.

Corey Washington scored 23 points and BJ Edwards had 15 points and six assists for the Broncos (12-2), who are in their second season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Jaron Pierre scored 13 points and Jaden Toombs scored 12 points.

After leading by nine points three times before being tied at halftime, SMU never trailed after halftime in the ACC opener. The Broncos shot 60% overall (36 points on 60 field goals) and 52% (14 points on 27 field goals) from three-point range.

Seth Trimble scored 22 points for North Carolina (13-2, 1-1 ACC), which is off to its best start in 15 years. Henri Veesaar scored 14 points, while rookie Caleb Wilson had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Washington scored nine of SMU’s first 11 points after halftime, including two game-winning 3-pointers. A second 3-pointer broke a 47-all tie with 17:01 left in the game and kept SMU in front. In between those three three-pointers, Wilson caught an alley-oop pass and the Tar Heels turned it into a game-tying three-point play of their own.

Miller had his second triple-double of the season, hitting 10 of 13 shots, including a 3-pointer from the right corner in front of the SMU bench with 14.5 minutes remaining when his stepback caught Wilson off balance and nearly falling.

SMU’s last win over a ranked team was an 85-83 win over No. 6 Houston on February 9, 2022.
