Blue Jays’ rookie SP Trey Yesavage to begin season on IL with a right shoulder impingement

The Toronto Blue Jays announced Thursday that right-hander Trey Yesavage will enter the injured list to start the 2026 season due to an impingement in his right shoulder.

Yesavage, 22, who was in the spotlight last season during the Blue Jays’ run to the World Series, will continue to pitch as he prepares for the regular season. He is scheduled to play again on March 25, two days before the team’s first game against the Athletics.

According to Arden Zwelling of Sportnet, Jesavic entered spring practice with shoulder issues. This was a factor in his slow growth. The regular season starts in a week, and he needs more time to get ready after throwing 35 pitches in Monday’s minor league game.

A timetable for Yesavage’s return has yet to be announced.

After starting last season in Single-A, Jesavic joined the Blue Jays during the playoffs. He started five games in the postseason, including Game 1 of the World Series, and had 39 strikeouts and a 1.05 WHIP in 27.2 innings pitched. In Game 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he set a World Series rookie record with 12 strikeouts in a 6-1 victory.

Jesavic isn’t the only starter the Blue Jays are missing early in the season, as Jose Berrios has a stress fracture in his right elbow and Sean Bieber is dealing with forearm fatigue. Head coach John Schneider will have to work with a staff that includes Dylan Seth, Kevin Gausman, Eric Lauer, Cody Ponce and Max Scherzer.
