Bills reportedly fire head coach Sean McDermott after 9 seasons

Sean McDermott has been fired as head coach of the Buffalo Bills, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

McDermott, 51, was hired in 2017 and led the Bills to five AFC East titles and eight playoff appearances in nine seasons.

Despite regular-season success — seven seasons of double-digit wins — a lack of postseason success led the Bills to make changes. McDermott’s Bills won just eight games in the postseason, including two losses to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.

The most recent loss came in the divisional round of the playoffs against the Denver Broncos. The Bills were unable to overcome a controversial interception and pass interference penalty, handing the team another heartbreaking playoff loss.

Under McDermott, the Bills have a perennial top-five offense and a top-10 defense led by quarterback Josh Allen. However, dominance on both sides of the ball wasn’t enough to get them to the Super Bowl.

Prior to being hired by the Bills, McDermott served as the defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2016 and as the defensive coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2001 to 2010.
