Bensebaini double inspires stunning Dortmund comeback

HSV looked set for a famous away win for most of the game, taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Philip Otele and Albert Sambi Lokonga. However, Dortmund showed great resilience after the break and Rami Bensebaini converted two penalties in Serhu Gilasi’s goal to complete a dramatic comeback.

The opening exchanges were intense as both sides struggled to maintain possession of the ball. Dortmund created their first clear chance when Nicolai Lemberg was dispossessed deep inside their own half, allowing Maximilian Bale to sprint towards the goal, but Daniel Hall Fernandez reacted quickly to deny him with his outstretched leg.

HSV gradually settled into the game and had their first real chance to take the lead 20 minutes ago. William Miklensis received the ball high up the pitch, drove into the box and set up Otlet for Di Rotosen to score his first goal.

Dortmund nearly found themselves in trouble again soon after, with Greg Kerber making a fine save to deny Lansford-Yeboah Koenigsdorfer from close range. At the other end, the home side thought they had been awarded a penalty when Felix Nmecha went down in the box, but an offside flag cut short the move.

HSV accidentally doubled their advantage seven minutes before the break. Dortmund failed to fully clear their defence, and the ball fell to Fabio Vieira, who slipped past Loconga and coolly finished to put the visitors firmly in control.

Before halftime, Dortmund had an excellent counterattack opportunity. Omari, who was warming up, brought down Bell in the penalty area. However, Nmecha squandered the opportunity as his penalty went wide and the home side trailed 2-0 at the break.

The home side once again showed renewed intent after the break, with Hoyle Fernandez attacking again to deny Nmecha from close range after a good strike from Bale.

As time ran out, Dortmund got a glimmer of hope with another penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Bensebaini stepped up and calmly inserted himself through the middle, sparking hopes of a comeback.

Momentum quickly swung in Dortmund’s favour, leveling the score just five minutes later. Julian Ryerson sent in a dangerous cross which Guirassy met and although his initial shot was saved, the forward reacted quickest to wrap the rebound over the line on the ground.

HSV were thrown into disarray and Dortmund completed their comeback shortly after being awarded a third penalty following a handball by Miro Muheim. Bensebaini once again kept his cool and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way into the bottom corner to the delight of the Westfalenstadion.

Gilasi had a chance to seal the victory in stoppage time, but Johor Fernandez made another great save. However, it proved to be unimportant as Dortmund secured a stunning 3-2 victory.

The victory gave Dortmund their third consecutive league victory and narrowed the gap on leaders Bayern Munich to nine points. For HSV, the defeat leaves them in 11th place with just one win in their past five games and could potentially move closer to a relegation battle depending on other results.
