Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano doesn’t care where he plays

Right… left… None of that matters for Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano.

The French just want to play.

At Bayern Munich, Upamecano often plays as a right central defender, while the French team usually uses the 26-year-old player to play on the left. None of this matters to Upamecano.

“If the coach tells me tomorrow, ‘Dayot, you are going to play defensive midfielder,’ I will play defensive midfielder. If he asks me to play right back, I will play right back. I will give it my all. It doesn’t bother me, to be honest. The angle of the pass is different, but defensively, it’s the same,” Upamecano told L’Equipe (captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I like to create miracles with the ball, to break the line. I learned that at Salzburg with Rangnick. I liked this style of play immediately. There is an element of risk. When it works, everyone says, ‘Great!’ If we don’t, people criticize us for taking risks. But I’ve always liked taking risks. As a defender, we also have this responsibility.”

Upamecano’s game has matured significantly in recent seasons, and his ability to adapt – and willingness to do what needs to be done – is something you can’t ignore.
