Bayern’s U-23 team’s return was postponed from last week due to heavy snowfall in Munich, with their game against SpVgg Unterhaching postponed from the weekend to Tuesday. The match was a huge success, with Bavaria deservedly winning 1-0, with Louis Richter scoring the winning goal against the second-placed side in the league on his first start of the season, while Deniz Ofli, Maycon Cardozo and David Santos Daiber (all promoted from the U-19s) made their debuts.

The winning streak continued with a rather easy win over 17th-ranked Hankoffen-Herring. The same starting line-up as against Andahsin (aside from centre-back David Heindl, who was left out of the game for unknown reasons and replaced by Ljubo Puljić) started the game against the struggling visitors and… well, struggled to create anything at first. The Bavarians’ best performance came with a handful of chances in the half, with Hanko Finn-Herring having the best chance of the game as the opposition forward failed to convert a one-on-one chance against goalkeeper Janis Bartel. In addition, the smart Richter left the field due to injury in the 50th minute. This is far from ideal.

But Bayern still created the most opportunities, controlled the ball more, and did not allow opponents to create too many opportunities. Ultimately, if they stick to it, this formula will lead to success. That’s exactly what happened, the team needed a little luck. Substitute Schubauer’s cross failed to be cleared and fell perfectly into the hands of star forward Anton Heinz, who took a touch and poked the ball past the goalkeeper. This forced the visitors to push forward more and this more attacking mentality was punished by another substitute, Julien Yanda, who used the vast space on the left to limit play.

Of course, no one win changes much for teams around the league. They are still deep in 6th place and will likely drop to 8th when the teams currently ranked 7th and 8th have played 3 games. In addition, they are still 17 points behind the leaders Nuremberg II despite having played one more game. However, the first priority is always to provide a stage for talented young people to perform. Ofoli, Cardoso and Santos immediately integrated into the team and performed well, which bodes well for their development. They’re not the only interesting talent on the team.

These talented players will have the chance to show their mettle again next Friday when they take on free-falling SpVgg Bayreuth.

Bayern U-19 3-3 Monchengladbach U-19, Match Day 4

Bayern lineup (substitute): Prescott Mumuni (63. Mijatovic), Pavlic, Schaefer, Ajay Lambe (73. Hunter Joe), Schmid (73. Zoers), Matosevic Eguatu (46. Snip), Gash (90. Chemwo), Mike (90. Bohomo).

Goals: 0:1 Wollsdorfer (8.), 1:1 Gash (19.), 1:2 Vali Falde (36.), 2:2 Gash (71.), 3:2 Zowers (85.), 3:3 Perrette (90.+4).

Red cards: Nico Horvat (BMG, 10), Louis Schaefer (BAY, 82)

Missing players: Michel Ekodi, Chivano Weeks, Noah Kodjo-Evora, Chris Afanu, Cassiano Chiara, Bogdan Olychenko

Position: 2., 7 points

Get three players back and lose two more. Goalkeeper Leonard Prescott and defender Chiara played for the German U-17 team in international competition in the Algarve Cup last weekend but had to miss the game. However, only Prescott fully recovered and Kira suffered a season-ending injury. He was joined on the sidelines by creative midfielder Olychenko, but Roy Snipe and Louis Schaefer each returned from injury. Meanwhile, Roko Mijatović continues to get playing time as he looks to return to game fitness from his ACL injury. When the regular starters at CB and GK return, one would think the defense would be much improved.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Bayern performed the worst in the opening period and deserved to concede the first goal. The defense on this goal was chaotic. Gladbach took the free-kick from a fairly wide position, a shot that would not have been dangerous, but as soon as the ball hit, the wall in front disappeared, allowing the ball to easily pass through and sneak into Prescott’s near post. The defense was not much better in the second quarter. The returning Schaefer performed well for half an hour, but still conceded a very sloppy penalty, causing Bayern to fall behind 2-1 at halftime. It is worth mentioning that Schaefer fouled clumsily again in the 82nd minute, received a second yellow card and was sent off. The team was left with only 10 players.

Yet at the same time, Yll Gashi shines. The team’s centre-forward proved his ability with two superb forward goals, bringing Bayern twice level at 1-1 in the 19th minute (a clever free-kick that also took advantage of poor defence) before making it 2-2 in the 71st minute (a touch from the right edge of the six-yard box, a perfect example of his poacher instincts). He controlled the ball brilliantly, latching on to Wisdom Maik’s cross and passing the ball to Simon Zssols as Bayern struggled to find a winner with both teams struggling. The substitute striker then buried the man who should have won.

But of course that’s not the case. In the 94th minute, the visiting team once again launched a last-gasp attack. The ball slipped past Richard Ajayi, was saved brilliantly by Prescott, and then bounced back to the goal. Although the Bavarians took the lead in the 70th minute and led 3-2 in the 93rd minute, the Bavarians failed to win the game.

The points table for the second stage of the league is as follows:

  1. Kaiserslautern Football Club, 8 points
  2. Bayern Munich, 7 points
  3. Monchengladbach 7 points
  4. Rasenballsport Leipzig, 7 points
  5. Hannover 96, 4 points
  6. Berlin AK, 0 points

Bayern U-17 3-5 Cologne U-17, Match Day 4

Bayern lineup: Poddar Stiebe – Pucci, Gash, Pavich, Horvat – Hunterjo Nsek, Osmani, Horoszak, Babur – Schaaf, Danioko

Goals: 0:1 Esposito (12.), 0:2 Esposito (26.), 1:2 Babur (29.), 2:2 Osmani (36.)., 3:2 Eigentor (50.), 3:3 Coles (58.), 3:4 Neugebauer (82.), 3:5 Al Sabadi (90.+2).

Position: 6., 1 point

This game was like a roller coaster. Cologne scored two goals in a row. Bayern chased the score to 3:2. Cologne scored another 3 goals to win. However, the situation of the U-17 team is quite serious: after three games, they have accumulated 0 points and are still 4 points away from qualifying for the next stage of the league. Luckily, they do have a game on their hands. The U-17s have two games this week, with the aforementioned game in midweek and then Game 5 at the weekend. They need to start picking up wins fast.

The table looks like this:

  1. FC Cologne, 10 points
  2. Karlsruhe, 9
  3. Nuremberg, 7
  4. Kaiserslautern, 4
  5. Hoffenheim, 1
  6. Bayern, 0
