Barcelona’s vision for the new Camp Nou stadium faces new complications that could have a direct impact on where the team plays in the 2027/28 season.
As a result, sources within Barcelona management told The Touchline that the club plans to start installing the stadium roof in 2027.

However, this step comes with significant trade-offs.
The roof installation process is expected to take several months, during which time the stadium will be unfit to host games.
This effectively rules out the possibility of the first team playing at Spotify’s Camp Nou while work is underway.
So what now?
With this in mind, Barcelona are already working on temporary solutions.
The preferred plan within the club is to use the Barcelona Athletic Stadium for the first half of the 2027/28 season.
The idea is to maintain operations within the club’s ecosystem rather than relocate again to a larger external venue.

If all goes to plan, the team could return to a fully operational Camp Nou by January 2028.
Meanwhile, a return to Olympique Luis at the Estadio Montjuïc remains an option, but it is not the club’s priority.
Financial considerations and the desire to avoid another temporary move prompted Barcelona to explore alternative solutions more seriously.

However, there is encouraging progress on construction.
Work on the third level of the stadium is now in its final stages, with much of the concrete structure already in place.

Only a small section above the south stand remains unfinished, indicating that the superstructure is nearing completion.
The club internally expects this phase to be completed by the end of this year, clearing the way for roof installation to begin in 2027.
That said, the stadium’s entire exterior structure, including the complete shell, is not expected to be completed until 2028.
Meanwhile, construction company Limak is preparing for an intense construction period.
There are no official matches scheduled during the summer break, so the most arduous renovation work will take place.

Barcelona, on the other hand, is also preparing for the worst-case scenario.
This means that if delays occur, clubs could negotiate with La Liga to start the new season with a series of away games, similar to what was done in 2025/26.
In this sense, the Johan Cruyff Stadium remains a backup venue if needed.
Simply put, once installation of the roof begins, the Spotify Camp Nou will be completely unavailable for matches. This reality forced Barcelona to temporarily relocate again.
