Athlete of the Week: Michaela Firks doing it all for Milton-Union

Jan. 9—The Milton League girls basketball team had more fun bus rides recently, with the help of an all-around athlete.

Philkes is a junior forward on the Milton League basketball team. In her team’s two games through 2025 against Brookville and Houston, she averaged 14.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists.

For her efforts, Philkes was named the Dayton Daily News Athlete of the Week from Dec. 15 to Jan. 3, an honor earned through reader voting at DaytonDailyNews.com.

“I’m so grateful that everyone voted for me,” she said when she found out she was the winner.

On December 29, Philkes nearly had a triple-double against Houston. She grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and scored 12 points. Her nine assists are just one shy of that distinction.

“I’ve been close. There was another time this season where I was two assists shy,” Filks said. “I guess I’m just a little disappointed that I’m only one game away because it’s so cool to be able to do that.”

Felks has been filling up the Bulldogs’ stat sheet all season long. She leads the Three Rivers Conference in assists this week and is the only individual in the conference to finish in the top five in points, rebounds and blocks.

The hours she spent waking up early in the summer mornings paid off for her and the Bulldogs this season. She said she feels every team needs a player who can contribute in multiple ways during the game and she’s very proud of the players who have grown into filling that role.

“I just try to play hard and impact every aspect of the game,” Filkes said. “It’s not just about scoring. It’s about finding open teammates, defending and rebounding.”

She has been on the Milton League team since her sophomore year, but due to state transfer rules, she was only able to play the first half of last season. This year she’s ready to take advantage of the opportunity to play a full season with her teammates.

“Our biggest goal is to win the league as a team,” Filkes said. “I really think it’s every game you can win.”
