Liverpool manager Arne Slott addressed the issue of racism in football at a press conference today, answering a question about the abuse suffered by Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior.
Slaughter stressed that the football community must continue to work towards eradicating racism in the sport and insisted that existing measures were not enough.
“In general, you can never do enough, you can always do more to ensure that [racism in football] Never again. “
The Dutch coach said responsibility was not limited to individual incidents and that football should set higher standards than society as a whole.
“As a football community we have to try to do more than society. By the way, maybe it’s not that difficult. The protocols were followed; that’s the first step,”
Slaughter also talked about how players and officials should respond when this happens, and expressed hope that his team can respond decisively.
“I hope my players will behave in a similar way – address this immediately and the referees will behave in a similar way.”
Vinicius has been subjected to racist abuse on numerous occasions in Spain and Europe over the past few seasons, sparking widespread condemnation across European football. Slott’s comments add to a growing chorus of voices within the game calling for stronger and more aggressive measures to combat racism.
