Any win against a top team drains you: Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram: South Africa have emerged as serious World Cup contenders but Aiden Markram finds the campaign tiring. “New Zealand, India and West Indies are all good teams and performing well against teams like that gives you confidence,” Markram said.

“But to be honest, it doesn’t feel easy. Every game wears you out. The intensity is very high and you know in T20 cricket things can change very quickly. You wake up the next morning and it could all be over in a matter of days.”

Markram praised the bowlers for keeping West Indies at 176/8. He was full of praise for all-rounder Corbin Bosch, who played flawlessly against Yorkers in the final, conceding only five runs. “He kept it very simple, trained smart and didn’t give himself a lot of options,” Markram said.

West Indies captain Shai Hope backed an aggressive batting approach even as the top order collapsed on Thursday. “Whenever you bat, there is always some element of risk. So if you want to challenge the opposition, then you have to find runs, especially on such a good surface. You still have to weigh the risk in some way. If we just bat deep but only get 150-160 on a surface like this, it’s always going to be a tough job,” Hope said.
