LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The driver who injured heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and killed two of his friends has been charged in a fatal crash in Nigeria, police said Friday.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged with dangerous and reckless driving in southwestern Ogun state following Monday’s crash, police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi said in a statement on Friday.
The vehicle carrying Joshua, Sina Gami and Latif “Lazi” Ayodele crashed into a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway connecting Ogun State to Lagos.
Babasai told The Associated Press that Kayode had been detained since being released from hospital on Thursday and was later released on 5 million naira ($3,480) bail.
The defendant was charged with four offences, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, careless driving and driving without a valid state driving licence.
A police spokesman said: “He will be remanded in custody while he meets his bail conditions.”
The court case was adjourned to January 20.
Two-time heavyweight champion Joshua was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after suffering minor injuries in a crash that raised questions about road safety in Nigeria. The boxer was discharged from the hospital after being deemed clinically fit to recover at home, authorities said.
Joshua’s family has roots in Nigeria, where he briefly attended boarding school as a child. He also holds Nigerian nationality.
Joshua’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing, told The Associated Press on Thursday that the boxer will stay in Nigeria.
