Anthony Edwards leaves bench with nearly 8 minutes remaining after Timberwolves pull starters in blowout loss

On Wednesday, the Timberwolves trailed by 29 points in the fourth quarter when head coach Chris Finch waved the white flag and benched his starters.

Anthony Edwards has seen enough. During the ensuing timeout, he threw down the towel in frustration, left the bench and walked into the tunnel with 7:52 left in the game. He did not return for Minnesota’s 126-102 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

After the game, Edwards did not speak to reporters.

Finch did it. He also warned about Edwards’ exit and said he should stay on the sidelines for the remainder of the game.

“Obviously he’s frustrated with his performance and rightfully so, but he needs to stay on the field and cheer for his team,” Finch said, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Edwards led the Timberwolves with 30 points in the loss. He clearly wanted to keep playing, and when he realized his night was over, he decided to leave the court altogether. But since he has not spoken to the media, his reasoning is unclear.

The Timberwolves’ loss was their third in four games and their worst start to the season at 21-13. They have two games left to settle the dust before facing the Miami Heat on Saturday, the third game of a four-game road trip.
