It would not be a surprise to see one or both John Stones or Nathan Ake leave Manchester City next summer. Both players were key players at Manchester City’s centre-back during their time at the club. Despite their performances, their careers at Manchester City appear to be coming to an end. Vitor Reis, Juma Ba and Abdelkodil Kusanov are all young centre-backs who could fill the role played by Ake and Stones on City’s roster. But if these two experienced defenders do leave City, you do get the sense that City would benefit from signing an experienced centre-back.
In that regard, it now appears that Crystal Palace captain Mark Ghey is the player Manchester City would like to add to bolster their defence. Given Gehi’s age, pedigree and performance at centre-back, he would be a perfect fit for Guardiola’s side.

Manchester City have reportedly identified Marc Gueye as a key transfer target.
Paul Hurst and Ian Whittle report to The Times that Manchester City have identified Crystal Palace centre-back Mark Gay as a key transfer target. Additionally, Manchester City have reportedly been keeping a close eye on Marc Gheihy’s progress as a player over the years. Hurst and Whittle report that Geshe’s contract with Crystal Palace expires at the end of this season. The England international has no shortage of suitors, including Liverpool, as he is available on a free transfer at the end of the season. It has also been reported that Crystal Palace may decide to cash in on Marc Guehi next month rather than lose him for free at the end of the 2025/26 season. Although this particular scenario seems unlikely.
Mark Gethy is a player who, if City can sign him, will add huge strength to City’s defence.
If City do lose John Stones and Nathan Ake next summer, ideally they will have to sign an experienced player to fill their shoes. Vitor Reis, Abdelkodir Kusanov and Juma Ba are still young and immature, and it is questionable whether these three are ready to play a major role in Guardiola’s side next season. If these three aren’t ready to play a big role in City’s defence, City will need to find an experienced centre-back to add to their ranks. Marc Gehy ticks almost all the boxes for a big role in Pep Guardiola’s side.

At 25 years old, Marc Guehi is entering the prime of his career. He established himself in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad and became one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. Gersh is the leader of Crystal Palace. His role as Palace captain underlines this fact. As a player, Geshe is calm and composed on the ball, and his physicality, ability to read the game and time challenges make him an elite centre-back. If City are able to sign Gueshi, he will also provide strong competition for Ruben Dias and Josco Gvardiol, which will improve the level of Manchester City’s centre-backs. This can only be a good thing for City’s defence.
Generalization.
Marc Gheihy appears to be Manchester City’s main transfer target at the moment. Manchester City will face stiff competition to sign the England international. But there does seem to be a place for him in Guardiola’s squad. He is a player who looks to be a great fit for the City squad to grow with, and if City are able to sign him, Guehi could come in, play a role at the Etihad and develop as a player.
