President Donald Trump and a slew of potential 2028 presidential candidates are taking a hit in a new poll.
An Economist/YouGov poll released on Tuesday found that Americans view Trump and Vice President Vance, as well as California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) more negatively than positively as the end of the year approaches.
The poll showed that Trump received 56% negative evaluation and 40% positive evaluation, and the gap between the two parties was even more obvious: 97% of Democrats had a negative evaluation of him and 3% had a positive evaluation of him, while 89% of Republicans had a positive evaluation of him and 9% had a negative evaluation of him.
Overall, the poll found his approval rating at 39% and his disapproval rating at 56%. Trump also faces negative reviews in key policy areas, including education, abortion, the environment, health care and the investigation into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Polls show Vance, positioned by a minority of Republicans as the presidential heir apparent, is doing slightly better than Trump in polls, with 50% viewing him unfavorably and 37% viewing him favorably.
The vice president has not officially announced his intention to run in 2028, but he remains the clear front-runner among other Republican figures in early polls. Vance told Fox News last month that he had thought about “what that moment might look like” after the 2026 midterm elections, noting that he would discuss the prospect with Trump then.
The poll found Newsom still tops among Democratic candidates, but among Americans, he has an approval rating of 44% and a disapproval rating of 33%. Ocasio-Cortez, despite largely trailing the rest of the party in the hypothetical primary, received similar ratings: 43% viewed her unfavorably and 32% viewed her favorably.
