Alvaro Arbeloa considers handing first Real Madrid start to 18-year-old midfielder

Real Madrid return to La Liga action on Monday against Getafe but could be without one of their regular starters. Eduardo Camavinga missed Sunday’s training with a severe toothache that rules him out of the Bernabeu derby.

Camavinga has been the undisputed starter since Alvaro Arbeloa switched to a 4-4-2 formation, occupying the left midfield position. However, he risks losing his place in the lineup if he is deemed not fit enough from the start against Getafe.

Brahim Diaz has emerged as the leading candidate to start if Camavinga is unable to start, but Marca reports that Arbeloa is ready to give his nod to Thiago Pitacci, who is yet to make a La Liga appearance.

Pitacci is highly regarded within Real Madrid, especially Arbeloa. He had him during his time as Castilla manager and has been keeping an eye on the 18-year-old for first-team football since taking over from Xavi Alonso.

Pitacci came on as a late substitute in all legs of Real Madrid’s Champions League play-off win over Benfica and can now make his first start. The idea is to have HM operate from Camavinga’s position on the left side of midfield, with Fede Valverde, Arda Guler and Aureliano Chuameni forming a quartet.

It will be interesting to see how Arbeloa organizes his team against Getafe. If Camavinga is deemed unavailable to start, he will have a major decision to make on his replacement. Brahim is a safe option but Pitach appears to have a chance of getting a full debut.
