Aberdeen’s players have six months to “prove themselves” as the club searches for Jimmy Thelin’s successor, according to sporting director Lutz Pfannansteel.

Pfannenstiel will assist interim head coach Peter Leven and lead the search for a new owner.

The Swede left on Sunday, a day after defeat at Falkirk, which left the Dons eighth in the Scottish Premiership. Levene’s first game as interim manager for the third time will be at Rangers on Tuesday night.

“You’ve got six months now to show yourself, you’ve got six months to prove you’re worthy of wearing the badge, you want to be an Aberdeen player and you want to work hard for it,” Pfannan Steele told the club’s media.

“If we’re acting like a colt and not really putting in the effort on the field and not upping the intensity, then that tells me we need to make more changes.

“It’s an open-door policy now. We have a lot of players to choose from. It’s always a reset when you bring in a new coach.

“It’s always an opportunity for all the players who have been here for many years or many months, whatever it is, to start from scratch, prove themselves, make themselves available and show that they want to be part of the team.

“The best eleven will play. Eighth in the league is not good enough.”

Alfie Dorrington has left Aberdeen after his second loan spell from Tottenham, and Pfannansteel has hinted that more players are set to leave, while also hinting that they will recruit new players in January.

“In terms of individual players, we have a very good team, but 11, 15 or 20 individually good players don’t necessarily make a good team,” he said.

“We need these connecting players who can make the current squad better and add a certain quality that will make us a better team.”

When it comes to the search for a new manager, Pfannansteel said there were “some big names, some surprising names, some terrible names, all nationalities”.

But he said the Tangs would take their time to avoid “making the wrong decision.”
