When the final whistle blew against Villarreal at the Camp Nou, there was no doubt that the situation was in Barcelona’s favour.
It didn’t happen at kick-off or after the first goal. The 58th minute arrived.

When the score was 2-1 against Villarreal, Hansi Flick made the decisive substitution.
Pedri replaces Dani Olmo. What happened next was unremarkable on the surface, but the effect was decisive.
Villarreal midfielder Santi Comesana later acknowledged what many had seen happen.
“With Pedri, the game is no longer back and forth. Pedri calms things down. He takes the ball away from us.” he said.

In just 38 minutes of play, Pedri completed 57 interventions and immediately became Barcelona’s main reference point in possession.

He attempted 55 passes, completing 52 and only missing three. This accuracy slows down the tempo, removes risk, and forces Villarreal to chase shadows.

His influence extended into the final third. His assist set up Lamine Hjalmar’s hat-trick and he also provided Jules Kounde with a pinpoint through ball that eventually set up Robert Lewandowski’s goal.
He created a total of two clear-cut scoring chances, scoring directly on both occasions.
Pedri’s work off the ball is equally effective. He completed his only attempted dribble, earned his only tackle and finished with four tackles, showing full commitment despite limited playing time.

Crucially, there are no clear signs that he is missing the game with a right hamstring problem. Instead, he looked sharp, composed and physically ready.
After he came on, Barcelona’s formation improved significantly. Possession lasted longer and transitions were better managed, and Villarreal’s confidence faded.
If this performance is any indication, Pedri’s return has arrived at the perfect time.
With a crucial Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid looming, Barcelona once again looked like a different team when their midfield playmaker came on board.
