JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A two-story building collapsed early Sunday in the South African town of Soweto west of Johannesburg, authorities said, killing three people, including a 1-year-old child.
Three others were injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at Chris Hani Balagwanath Hospital.
According to authorities, six people were inside the building when it collapsed, and emergency crews rescued three injured people who were trapped under the rubble.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Service spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said: “Tragically, three people lost their lives in this incident, including two adult women and a child. The incident has been handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.”
On December 12, a multi-storey building on the site of a Hindu temple near the coastal city of Durban collapsed, killing five people.
The structure was being built on top of a temple in the town of Verulam, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of Durban, when it collapsed.
One person was reported dead at the time, but search and rescue teams later recovered four more bodies from the rubble, bringing the death toll to five.
