In the first period, interstate hatred was rife. Although there were no goals, a total of 30 shots were taken, 20 of which were scored by the Flyers. The Flyers also defeated the Penguins by a score of 9-5. About a dozen more altercations occurred after the whistle.

In the first quarter of the game, both sides had opportunities to have a strong showdown, but they failed. The Flyers thought they scored on a power play opportunity, but Flyers forward Christian Dvorak ran into Penguins netminder Stuart Skinner and made no attempt to avoid contact with him. While the puck did find the back of the net, the goal was immediately disallowed by the on-ice referee and the Flyers did not challenge it.

Although Skinner reversed the Flyers’ three breakthroughs and two-on-one, the Flyers still broke the deadlock at 9 minutes and 19 seconds of the second quarter. The Penguins’ entire five-man group was on the ice for more than a minute as the Flyers circulated the puck and steamrolled the tired team. The puck eventually found its way to the stick of Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale (1), who wristed the puck from the bottom of the right circle through traffic in front and then through Skinner’s five.
