Another round of severe thunderstorms is possible tonight in Lower Michigan. Weather conditions will change quickly tonight in Lower Michigan.
This storm system has what we meteorologists call “high dynamics.” Strong high-altitude winds are the engine of severe thunderstorms. Due to these strong dynamics, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed much of Lower Michigan under a severe weather forecast for isolated tornadoes and severe gusty thunderstorm winds. SPC discussions said 80 mph gusts were possible given the wind volumes aloft.
Here are three types of severe thunderstorm forecasts: tornadoes, gusty winds and large hail. The yellow shaded areas have a 15% chance of severe weather, which is enough to monitor the weather closely.

The high-altitude dynamics I talked about earlier along with the wind shear make tornadoes possible just about anywhere under Michigan. The real threat from tornadoes is throughout the southern half of Lower Michigan, especially the southern third.

The SPC mentioned wind gusts could reach up to 80 mph during thunderstorms.

Any severe thunderstorm can produce hail. No large hail is expected from tonight’s storm. I’d still put your car in the garage tonight before a thunderstorm hits your area.

Radar forecasts provide you with a schedule of severe thunderstorm squall lines.

Thunderstorms will develop over southwestern Lower Michigan and west-central Michigan early tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. The first thunderstorm may be an isolated super thunderstorm. These are the types of thunderstorms that can produce tornadoes.
Eventually, the thunderstorm will condense into a solid line of thunderstorms by 7 to 8 p.m. This line of thunderstorms will move through central and eastern Lower Michigan between 8 p.m. and midnight.
If a storm appears severe in your area, be prepared to take cover. Give yourself a few minutes to reach a safe area. Don’t wait until the last second to take cover.
