Grand Canyon hotels to halt overnight stays for’ ‘foreseeable future’

Waterline outages have temporarily ended overnight accommodations on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

According to Grand Canyon National Park, overnight stays, including at multiple hotels, will cease starting Dec. 6 due to additional water restrictions in place. Park officials said a series of “significant” breaks in the cross-canyon waterline that supplies canyon water to the park halted water pumping to the South Rim.

The suspension of overnight stays is expected to remain in place “for the foreseeable future”. Similar restrictions were implemented on the South Rim in late August.

The park added that the South Rim water supply has been an issue since mid-November.

An official social media post noted that the park will remain open to visitors and that hotels in the town of Tusayan will not be affected. Day use of the park will continue and all South Rim food services, Grand Canyon Clinic and post offices will remain open, the park said.

Hotels affected by the overnight stay suspension include those managed by Xanterra or Delaware North:

Park officials added that only dry camping is allowed on the South Rim and within the canyon, and no fires are allowed.
