‘We don’t even have A/C’

No one wants to open their monthly electric bill and see big numbers. So when a homeowner sees more than $1,500 in charges on their bill, they’re admittedly speechless.

To better understand all their options, they solicited input from the community via r/solar.

One Reddit user received a hefty $1,500 electricity bill, and the comments section was full of opinions on what he or she should do.

Installing solar panels on your home can be one of the best ways to increase your home’s energy efficiency, bringing your energy costs down to or close to $0. You can use TCD’s Solar Explorer to connect with vetted installers and save up to $10,000 on your solar installation by curating competitive bids.

Despite the money-saving and energy-efficient appeal of solar, this homeowner couldn’t help but feel blindsided by the hefty bill.

“The monthly bills went up and down, averaging around $100, and suddenly I got a $1,500 bill and three months later had a bigger bill to pay,” they noted. “We didn’t even have air conditioning. A refrigerator. Gas water heater and stove.”

Even after talking to the electric and solar company’s customer service department, the Reddit user still couldn’t find the reason for the huge bill.

Despite seeking concrete answers, most users in the comments section were also somewhat confused by the seemingly mysterious accusation.

One commenter wrote: “It’s hard to imagine receiving such a large bill even at peak daytime rates. It really feels like a billing error.”

But after the original poster went into more detail about their energy usage, the picture seemed to become clearer. In another video upload, the homeowner revealed that their home uses more than 13,700 kilowatt hours of electricity in a month, which is much higher than the average usage over the past 12 months.

Another commenter quipped: “Either you just built a grow house in your basement or there’s something wrong with your meter. 13 megawatts a month is ridiculous. I use half that in a year.”
