Conflict with neighbors?
When Alan and Portia were still renovating, there were many reports of disputes with local residents. After the couple began renovating and adding to the large farmhouse, people in the community they moved to began speaking out because some believed they lived on or near historic Roman ruins. They’ve been very busy renovating the home, reportedly adding an indoor pool, gym, and more.
Residents fear extensions to old houses could increase the risk of flooding and therefore the risk of damage to Roman ruins. A letter from their area’s parish council said: “Residents are concerned that hedgerows and wire fencing could increase the risk of flooding in the village if rubbish is washed down and ‘gets stuck on the fence’, thereby ‘restricting the flow of water’ across the fields.”
Although all fears were allegedly put to rest with the discovery that the Roman ruins were actually 200 yards from their property, some have speculated that conflicts with local residents may have been the real catalyst for Ellen and Portia to purchase more real estate.

Robb Report reports that the couple completed an off-market deal on a large estate in Montecito, California, for $27.4 million. The home once belonged to producer Brian Grazer, who bought it in 2012 for $7.6 million. The property sits on more than 3 acres, with the home measuring approximately 8,700 square feet, a few outbuildings and a pickleball court.
While the deal has been signed and finalized, Alan and Portia are still waiting for their English farmhouse to be sold. They’ve listed the 43-acre property for $30 million. Allen explained that they originally purchased the large estate because Portia “needed a house with horse facilities and a pasture.”
It remains to be seen whether the pair will move back across the pond to live in California, or simply expand their real estate portfolio. However, we do know that it’s not all rainbows in England…
