president Donald Trump He lashed out at European leaders at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday.
In his speech, Trump discussed his tariffs and the Swiss boycott. The president boasted that he raised tariffs to 39% after Switzerland protested against a 30% tariff, and later lowered it after the country’s leaders and companies including Rolex protested. He accused European countries of “taking advantage” of the United States in trade and argued that tariffs are the only way to level the global playing field.
He said:
Everyone comes to visit me. Rolex came to me. They all come to me but I realize it and cut back because I don’t want to hurt others. I don’t want to hurt them. We brought it down to a lower level. It doesn’t mean it’s not rising, but we’re bringing it down to a lower level. But they now pay tariffs. But I realized we have a lot of these places that are getting rich because of America. Without America, they can do nothing. Think about it, Switzerland made $41 billion off us.
Trump claimed that the United States was keeping “the whole world running” and directly named European leaders, pointing them out in the crowd and, somewhat jokingly, accusing them of being too scared to even look at him.
The President said:
I realized in that conversation that America is keeping the entire world running. In many places, I can give you six or seven places just for the people in this small area. I know every one of them. They’re kind of – they’re looking down. They didn’t want to see me or look into my eyes. But they’re taking advantage of — everyone’s taking advantage of America.
