what we know

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, January 2, near Ellis Avenue and Winchester Road in Libertyville. Emergency crews were called to the area after workers on an outbound Metra train reported seeing a body on the tracks.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. He was identified as Allen Chiquini, 30, of Mundelein, according to the coroner’s office.

An autopsy conducted on January 5 determined that Chiquini died of blunt force trauma to the head, consistent with being struck by a train.

Investigators said video evidence showed Chiquini boarding an earlier northbound train and mistakenly believing it was traveling southbound. After being unable to open the passenger door, he climbed over a safety barrier and exited the back of the train.

The coroner’s office said Chichini either fell or tried to step off the train while it was moving. The incident occurred between the stop where he boarded the bus and the next scheduled stop.
