Czechia spreads the wealth and Marik steps up in goal in 7-2 win over Denmark at World Juniors

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Seven players scored a goal each and Mathias Malik had a strong performance in the back of the net as the Czech Republic beat Denmark 7-2 at the world youth championship on Saturday night.

Malik made 20 of 22 shots and only conceded one goal in the first and third quarters. He replaces Michal Orsuak, who allowed seven goals in Friday’s 7-5 loss to Canada.

Tomas Galvas scored a goal and provided two assists for the Czech Republic.

The Czech team defeated Danish goalkeeper Anton Wilder with 53 shots.

The two teams each scored a goal in the first 6 minutes of the game. Vojtech Cihar of the Czech team scored and Tristan Petersen of the Danish team equalized. In the 12th minute of the game, Denmark’s Jesper Olesen was fouled for hitting Matyas Man in the head. Matej Kubiesa scored on a power play to help the Czech team regain the lead 2-1.

The Czech team scored three goals in the second period. Vaclav Nestrasil opened the scoring with a wicked shot to take a 3-1 lead before Denmark’s Oliver Larsen made it 3-2. Adam Jiricek scored at 11 minutes and 20 seconds of the second quarter, making the score 4-2. Stepan Hoch scored to make it 5-2 with 5 minutes left in the game.

The Czech team scored twice in the third quarter. Galvas scored on an early power play and Richard Zemlicka scored on a breakaway with 14 minutes remaining.

Next

The Czech Republic also plays Finland on Monday.

Denmark, which lost its first game to Finland, will face Canada on Monday.
