Protesters rally at Ford Airport against Avelo Airlines

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – A lot of people are traveling this holiday weekend and airports are busy. That’s why a group of demonstrators gathered outside Grand Rapids’ Gerald R. Ford International Airport on Saturday afternoon to protest against Avelo Airlines.

They oppose airlines cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on deportation flights. An Avelo spokesperson told News 8 the company does not have a contract with ICE but has operated flights under both the Trump and Biden administrations. They explained that these flights had no passengers.

Demonstrators at Ford Field say they will be there every other week and will continue to seek justice for immigrants. They also hope their actions will encourage people to reconsider flying with the airline.

“This is like the only bright spot in this whole situation. It’s been a nightmare this whole year. It gives me a lot of hope that there are other people who care,” said demonstration organizer Nan Nickerson.

An Avelo spokesperson issued a statement.

“We recognize the right of individuals to assemble peacefully and safely. Avelo’s main priority remains maintaining the safety and timeliness of our operations so that our more than 8.6 million customers continue to receive this service.”
