Future of the Tomb Raider Franchise Will Be Revealed at The Game Awards This Week

The future of the Tomb Raider series will be revealed this week at The Game Awards 2025. The Game Awards and the official Tomb Raider social media channels have confirmed that Lara Croft’s next adventure will be announced at the event on December 11. Crystal Dynamics has been working on the next Tomb Raider game, and despite several rounds of layoffs, work on the project continues.

Tomb Raider wins Game Awards

Tomb Raider’s appearance at The Game Awards was first confirmed on a Fortnite map dedicated to voting for the event. Subsequently, Game Awards producer and host Geoff Keighley confirmed in a post on X that the future of the “Tomb Raider” series will be revealed at the awards ceremony on December 11.

“As we just revealed in the Fortnite Map Portal’s Game Awards voting, tune in to Thursday night’s show to see what the future holds for one of gaming’s most iconic franchises,” he said.

The official controller of “Tomb Raider X” stated that the reveal of “Tomb Raider” at the 2025 Game Awards will be “a moment you can’t miss.”

The next Tomb Raider game

Neither Keighley nor the official Tomb Raider account confirmed whether the news would include the next Tomb Raider game, instead referring to “the future of the series.” However, developer Crystal Dynamics has been working on the next game in the series. It is confirmed to be a single-player, narrative-driven adventure game that continues the story of Lara Croft. The game is developed using Unreal Engine 5 and will be “the largest and most content-rich Tomb Raider game to date.”

Crystal Dynamics has gone through several rounds of layoffs this year, especially after the cancellation of the Perfect Dark reboot for Xbox. The studio co-developed the game with now-shuttered first-party Xbox studio The Initiative.

In August, Crystal Dynamics announced a second round of layoffs, but confirmed that the Tomb Raider project was “not affected by the layoffs.”

Tomb Raider announcements at The Game Awards may also include a live-action Tomb Raider TV series in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The play is directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and stars Sophie Turner as Lara Croft. The Tomb Raider series will interconnect with the Tomb Raider video games to form a unified story universe.

The last mainline Tomb Raider game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, was developed by Eidos Montreal and released in 2018. Two remastered collections of the first six Tomb Raider games will be released in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
