Is it time to finally ditch that cool_duude1314@gmail.com email address you registered in college and find yourself one that doesn’t sound so…weird? Then it might be time to learn how to migrate to a new Gmail address.
We’ve all been there – the early days of the internet were a dark time and those “cool” email addresses sounded like a good idea at the time. However, it makes sense to get a new email address and not be shy about putting it on your resume. Signing up for a new Gmail or any other email account is easy, but you don’t want to be left with all your old emails or have to keep managing two accounts, right?
The good news is you don’t have to do either of these things. You can proceed in two ways – You can transfer all your old mail to your new email account so that everything can be searched and accessed in one place. Alternatively, you can manage your old account from your new Gmail account so both remain active. Once the initial setup is complete, both methods will work fine, although the first method is much simpler.
You need to do this if you want to migrate from an old Gmail account to a new Gmail account. Note that these steps only work if you open Gmail on a desktop browser, as not all options are available in the Gmail app or Gmail on mobile. Instead, if you want, you can add your old accounts (including non-Gmail accounts) to the app so you can access them all in the same place.
Move emails from one Gmail account to another
As we mentioned above, this is the easier of the two methods. To import your old mail and contacts, all you need to do is change a few settings in your new Gmail account. Note that this only seems to work with Gmail accounts – Google Apps accounts (Gmail accounts that don’t use an @gmail.com address) may not have the same option.
You need to do the following to move emails and messages from one Gmail account to another:
- Open your new Gmail account.
- click gear icon and click on the upper right corner set up.
- Click Accounts and imports.
- Click Import mail and contacts.
- In the pop-up window, enter your old email address and click continue.
- Click continue In the next pop-up and the new pop-up, log in to your old account.
- Click agree After logging in, the second popup window will close. On the next screen, select all the checkboxes (Import Contacts, Import Mail, Import New Mail for Next 30 Days) and click Start importing.
That’s it, you’re done. Gmail will begin importing your old mail from the account, and will also import all of your contacts. The process is not instant and, depending on the volume of messages in it, may take a while. Now spread the word to everyone and let them know your new address, and all mail sent to your old address will continue to be sent to your new address for the next 30 days. Afterwards, you can say goodbye to your old address and all your contacts and emails are safe and sound.
Manage old Gmail addresses with new addresses
If you think you’re continuing to receive important mail at your old email address, you may want to check it from time to time. But managing multiple emails is cumbersome. If you can have it all in one place, why not, right?
You can set up Gmail to continue getting mail from your old email account, but as we mentioned earlier, this process involves a few extra steps. This is what you do.
- Go to your old Gmail account.
- click gear icon Then click set up.
- click Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
- exist Popular downloads section, click Enable POP for all mail. Here you can also choose what to do with messages from the old address – you can keep a copy in the old account, mark them as read, archive them, or delete them, depending on your preference, via the drop-down menu in the POP Downloads section. If you don’t know what this is supposed to be, leave it at the default setting (i.e. keep the copy in your inbox).
- Scroll down and click Save changes. Now, log out and go to your new Gmail account.
- click again gear icon Then click set up.
- click Accounts and imports tab.
- In the fourth section, Check emails from other accountsclick Add email account.
- In the pop-up window, enter your old email address and click Next. On the next screen, select Import emails from my other account (POP3)then click Next.
- You can enter your password here and if you want to delete messages from your old account, make sure Keep a copy of the retrieved message on the server Not selected.
- You can also check Mark incoming messages This way emails sent to your old address will be easy to find and won’t be confused with emails from your new account. The default label is your old email address, but you can change it by clicking the drop-down box to the right of the option.
- Once you have selected all the settings you want, click Add account.
That’s it, you’re done. This way, all your old emails will be (slowly) transferred, while your contacts will be quickly backed up, and all new emails will continue to show up in your new email account, too.
