An as-yet-unidentified man killed four adults and five children with sharp objects at a home in the town of Richelieu in the South American country’s Comerveune district, police said in a statement.
He also “seriously injured” a sixth child and another adult during the attacks, which took place late on Saturday, December 27, and into the early hours of Sunday, December 28.
The two injured were taken by ambulance to the emergency room of the academic hospital in the capital, Paramaribo, and hospitalized, officials said.
The suspect attempted to attack Eastern Regional Police who responded to the scene, and the man was injured during his arrest, suffering a gunshot wound to the leg. He was hospitalized and is being monitored, police said.

Suriname’s President Jennifer Gillings-Simons shared a statement about the killings on Facebook, writing that she was “shocked by the violence in Komoveane.”
“In a time when family and friends should support and support each other, we are faced with a harsh reality and the world knows the other side,” she wrote in Dutch. “A father took the life of his own child while killing his neighbor. Wishing all those who have lost loved ones strength, strength and comfort in this unimaginably difficult time.”
