5 greatest Super Bowl MVPs in history

Super Bowl 60 is less than a week away as the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks square off. The Super Bowl is one of, if not the, biggest sporting event in the world. The player with the brightest and brightest spotlight is usually named the Super Bowl MVP. While we’ve seen quarterbacks win the award multiple times, there are exactly two non-quarterbacks on this list.

These five players were at their best when it mattered most and became one of the five most impressive MVP performances in Super Bowl history.

5. Terrell Davis, running back, Denver Broncos, Super Bowl 32 vs. Green Bay Packers

The former sixth-round pick outplayed Brett Favre and the Packers with a stellar performance. Davis’ 157 rushing yards and three touchdowns helped John Elway win his first Super Bowl.

4. Joe Montana, quarterback, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIV vs. Denver Broncos

In one of the best quarterback performances in Super Bowl history, Montana completely dissected the acclaimed Orange Crush defense. Joe Cool threw for 297 yards and five touchdowns in the 55-10 victory.

3. Jerry Rice, wide receiver, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIII vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The NFL’s all-time best receiver earned the honor with a stellar running game against the Bengals. He had 11 catches for 215 yards and a score to help the 49ers beat the Bengals 20-16.

The greatest comeback in Super Bowl history was orchestrated by the winningest quarterback in NFL history. Brady passed for 466 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception, completing a 25-point comeback and ultimately winning 34-28 in overtime.

1. Steve Young, QB, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIX vs. San Diego Chargers

This might be the best performance ever by any quarterback. After ultimately defeating the Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game, Young proved he could replace departed Joe Montana in the Super Bowl, throwing for 325 yards and six touchdowns in a 49-26 win over the Chargers.
