The San Francisco 49ers never got a chance to see what their 2025 offense would look like with Brandon Aiyuk at wide receiver, and the 27-year-old was placed on the PUP list early in the year due to injury and later left the team entirely.
Because of his actions, the 49ers revoked Aiyuk’s guarantee and said they would waive the wide receiver before the start of the 2026 season.

There will certainly be teams interested in Aiyuk if he is released, despite the private and public issues between the former first-round pick last year and the team that brought him to the NFL.
Earlier this week, CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani released his list of “Crazy 2026 NFL Offseason Predictions,” which included Aiyuk looking for a new team in free agency.
“The Los Angeles Chargers changed their offensive philosophy by switching Greg Roman to Mike McDaniel as coordinator,” Dajani wrote. “It’s clear the Chargers need to upgrade their offensive line depth, but they may also be in the market for new weapons. After being released from the San Francisco 49ers, Aiyuk will sign with the Chargers to help Justin Herbert reach the next level… In Los Angeles, Aiyuk finds an offense ready to take off.”
We’ve seen what the 49ers offense looks like without Aiyuk this year, and it’s ugly. If they do commit to moving on from him entirely, they’ll need to sign one of their own top free agents or high draft picks to address the issue.

The 49ers are also scheduled to host the Chargers at home next year, which means Aiyuk will have a chance to have a “revenge game” at Levi’s Stadium in 2026.
