49ers provide updates on Trent Williams, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, who calls new back ailment ‘not serious’ ahead of Seahawks showdown

The status of multiple 49ers Pro Bowlers is unclear as San Francisco prepares for Saturday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an injury update on players, including Trent Williams, Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle, ahead of Tuesday’s walkthrough.

Williams and McCaffrey did not participate in the drill, which is par for the course for two veterans taking part in the first practice of the week. But they all have injury designations.

McCaffrey was listed on the practice report with a back injury. Shanahan declined to clarify when the injury occurred, but told reporters it was “just stiffness.”

McCaffrey added that the injury was “not serious,” suggesting his fitness for Saturday’s game is not under threat. Given his injury history, it will be interesting to see what happens the rest of the week.

Williams, meanwhile, is dealing with a hamstring injury that he suffered on the first possession of San Francisco’s win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday night. Shanahan told reporters that Williams has not ruled out playing Saturday.

“We’re not sure how long he’s going to be out,” Shanahan said when asked how long Williams would be out. “We’re going to give him a chance this week. We’ll see.”

Kittle, meanwhile, returned to practice as a limited participant with a sprained ankle. His participation is an encouraging sign for the 49ers after he missed Sunday’s game due to an injury suffered in the previous Monday night’s win over the Colts.

However, Shanahan isn’t ready to declare Kittle ready to face Seattle.

“I wouldn’t think so,” Shanahan said when asked if Kittle had a good chance to play. “We barely moved at all today. It was just a drill. Because it’s such a short week, we’re not going to do much all week long.

While McCaffrey sounds expected to play, the status of Williams and Kittle is less clear. With the top seed and accompanying first-round playoff bye at stake, all of them are expected to play on Saturday if there’s a way to do it.
