45 cited as deputies go off-road at massive OHV gathering in Apple Valley

Sheriff’s deputies issued dozens of tickets during a law enforcement and education event following a recent large gathering of off-road vehicles in Apple Valley.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Off-Highway Vehicle Team rode their own dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles to monitor a large motor vehicle gathering that drew more than 250 vehicles to the Juniper Flats OHV area in Apple Valley, according to the agency.

The sheriff said in a written statement that the “large-scale OHV education and enforcement operation” is designed to remind off-road motorists to “ride smart, ride safe and have fun.”

“During the operation, deputies contacted approximately 900 people and provided education and off-road safety guidance to many off-road enthusiasts,” the statement said. “Off-road vehicles were stopped approximately 50 times for various violations, including: not wearing a helmet, not wearing a seat belt, registration violations, and operating an OHV on a public road.”

By the end of the operation, officers had issued 45 tickets and towed seven SUVs, officials said.

One person was arrested for driving without a license and the other was arrested on an outstanding felony warrant from Los Angeles County.

“The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and OHV Team would like to remind off-road enthusiasts to familiarize themselves with legal riding areas, off-road laws and requirements, and most importantly, enjoy our public lands safely and responsibly,” the statement said.

The event was attended by deputies from multiple Sheriff’s stations as well as representatives from the Sheriff’s Traffic Operations Division and San Bernardino County Code Enforcement Division.
