The Buffalo Bills end the 2025 season feeling like they missed an opportunity. Buffalo had another strong season, finishing the year with 12 wins. However, losses to New England, Miami and Atlanta sealed the Bills’ fate, causing them to fall from the top of the AFC East for the first time in five seasons.
Once again, the Bills’ season came to a heartbreaking end. Buffalo fell short of the AFC Divisional Playoffs, losing to the Denver Broncos in overtime.

Buffalo started the offseason with a bang, firing head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons. Owner Terry Pegula highlighted McDermott’s inability to lead the team to the Super Bowl as the main reason for his move from arguably the team’s second-best coach behind Marv Levy.

Season review
On January 17, 2026, at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was disappointed that he had to attempt a field goal to tie the game after several unsuccessful attempts at the end zone during the second half.
Quarterback Josh Allen is everything to this team. Without Allen at the helm, this team is a .500 team at best. He led the team to the playoffs again despite dealing with multiple ailments.

Allen’s production hasn’t reached the level of the 2024 Super Bowl season, but he’s still been great with the Bills.
Allen was once again dominant as a runner, serving as Buffalo’s short-yardage offense. He also made the most of his receiving corps, keeping them in the right spots all year long.
However, Allen also seemed to let teams work against him at times. Allen’s injuries have hindered him at times. There were some scripts where he was forced to star in and he definitely wanted to come back. For example, Allen missed close passes in the playoffs in Philadelphia and Denver that would have given his team wins.
Make no mistake: Without Allen, there would be no playoffs, let alone a winning season. However, some of his mistakes resulted in a less-than-ideal year for Buffalo.

big problem
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen prepares to start against the Jets at home on Jan. 4, 2026, at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. He left the field after the game and Mitchell Trubisky took over.
Can Allen hold on?
Allen is everything to Buffalo. It’s hard to imagine what this team would be like without him.
He is the focal point of Buffalo’s offense. Whenever he’s on the field, the Bills have a chance to win.
However, there were too many times where Allen went into Superman mode and carried the team on his back. Once again, it feels like Allen is doing more than his peers around the league.
Buffalo may be fourth in the league in points per game, but scoring seems to be a bit of a challenge at times this year.

In addition, Allen’s health also had an impact on his performance. Allen is 80% better than most quarterbacks at their best. Still, injuries have limited the superstar’s performance at times.
In short: The new regime must do more to help Allen. Otherwise, we’ll see Allen playing in his head, which can lead to timely mistakes. Allen is a superstar – he shouldn’t have to force himself to lead this team all the time.
draft status
The odds of the Bills drafting a quarterback this year are slim. It would make more sense for the team to have an experienced quarterback as Allen’s backup. There’s no way a rookie quarterback can replicate Allen’s abilities. It would be safer to have a known commodity behind Allen on the depth chart.
