14th Street closed due to risk of century-old DC sewer tunnel collapsing

Washington (washington dc news now) — First responders have blocked off the streets of Thomas Circle as a century-old abandoned sewer tunnel is at risk of collapsing.

On Sunday, Washington Water said it was taking emergency measures because an abandoned, century-old brick sewer tunnel under the road was at risk of collapse. The street was initially closed early Saturday morning as a precaution after crews noticed the road was unstable during traffic.

Engineering investigators confirmed that emergency stabilization measures were needed to prevent the road from collapsing. Officials said the plan involves carefully filling 42 inches of abandoned sewer tunnels with material to support the road.

The process is expected to take several days, with crews hoping to reopen the road by mid-week.

“During the stabilization period, DC Water is working closely with partners to identify utility routes in the area to help minimize service disruptions and ensure the safety of all utility infrastructure in the area,” DC Water wrote in a release.

road closures and detours

Detour signs are posted in the area as first responders continue to monitor the situation.

  • All northbound lanes of 14th Street are closed between L Street and Thomas Circle.

  • Northbound drivers are advised to use 13th Street or 15th Street as an alternate route.

  • Pedestrian access will be maintained where it is safe to do so, but travelers are urged to follow posted directions and avoid restricted areas.

  • Southbound lanes of 14th Street remain open and are not affected by the northbound lane closure.

  • The eastbound L Street bike lane remains open and is not affected by the 14th Street closure.
