10-year-old used kitchen knife to stab 7-year-old in chilling Mountain View school stabbing, police say

(KRON) — Mountain View police are investigating a stabbing that occurred Wednesday afternoon on the Babb Elementary School playground. A child participating in an after-school program suffered minor injuries during an incident in a school play area, according to authorities.

Police said the suspect, a 10-year-old boy, has been detained.

Mountain View police and fire departments responded around 3:30 p.m. and the school, located at 525 Hans Ave., was placed on lockdown.

Fire department personnel treated the child victim at the scene and released him to his parents. Police said the victim, a 7-year-old child, was stabbed three times in the shoulder.

A kitchen knife was found at the scene and is believed to be the weapon used.

The 10-year-old suspect fled the scene before police arrived. Police searched the area and found residential surveillance video. A patrol officer later identified the suspect through residential video and recognized him from previous contact.

The Los Altos Police Department K-9 unit tracked the suspect from the school to his residence, where officers coordinated with a guardian to take the 10-year-old into custody without incident.

Custody of the juvenile suspect has been turned over to clinicians at Pacific Clinic, Santa Clara County’s youth mental health services provider.

“The suspect is not a student at the school and does not participate in extracurricular activities,” the Mountain View Police Department told KRON4. “There is no ongoing threat to the community.”

The incident remains under active investigation.
