The Atlanta Falcons have officially announced: They will release quarterback Kirk Cousins on March 11, making him a free agent.
Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham announced the news Tuesday morning.

“Everything he’s done in his career, we owe it to him just to give him some clarity as he enters free agency,” Cunningham said at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
To most people, this move isn’t shocking. There was speculation before it was announced that Cousins would be waived. Atlanta signed Cousins to a $180 million contract two years ago, but then shocked many when they selected Michael Penix in the 2024 draft.
But what happens next for Cousins? Well, he could always return to the Minnesota Vikings, which many think he might do, but does he want to be a backup again?
After JJ McCarthy’s struggles last season, the Vikings are clearly considering other options. Now that Cousins is 37, he could take the money the Falcons owe him and retire, but he doesn’t seem open to that.
Despite his age, Cousins will still be one of the hottest names on the free agent market.
