Another bright spot in Breezy Johnson’s eventful week came on Thursday when the downhill skier got engaged to boyfriend Connor Watkins at the super-G base in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
As skiers from other countries gathered near the finish area, Watkins knelt down to propose, NBC News reported. After Johnson said “yes,” her U.S. teammates and nearby ski officials cheered.

“I mean, that’s my hope!” Johnson told NBC’s Cara Banks when asked if she dreamed of getting engaged at the Olympics. “But it’s definitely a lot crazier, with everything happening at once and the reality being so different and much better than the way you imagined it.”
Watkins said he hoped she would find a spot in the end zone to propose the way he wanted. “It turns out we can, and we’re very excited,” he said.
Johnson, 30, who won gold in the women’s downhill race on Sunday, achieved the milestone shortly after falling during Thursday’s super-G and failing to finish. A day earlier, the combination of Johnson and Mikayla Shiffrin failed to win a medal in the women’s mixed event.
The engagement ring will pair perfectly with the replacement gold medal Johnson received this week after the original ring broke while celebrating a downhill victory.
Milan is Johnson’s second Olympics. At the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, she finished seventh in the downhill and 14th in the super-G.
