Will Tyler Buchner be QB2 for Notre Dame in 2026?

Notre Dame still faces the same quarterback issues next season that it had in December. Who will be the QB2 after C.J. Carr? There was some movement in the transfer portal as Notre Dame began searching for a possible QB2, but nothing came of it.

The Irish will have three other quarterbacks on their 2026 roster: sophomore Blake Herbert, freshmen Noah Grubbs and Teddy Garrard — three players who have not played in a game.

So what now?

Well… there might be a very well-known player as another option. Yes – Tyler Buchner (as the title says).

On a recent Ireland Illustrated podcast, Tim O’Malley talked about quarterback/ball carrier/lacrosse player Tyler Buchner and suggested that Buchner may have one more year of eligibility left to play quarterback for the Irish.

Tim O’Malley: By the way, I have to ask this question. I don’t believe this will happen. I would like to thank my coworker who texted me yesterday.

If so, I got a text yesterday saying, have you heard anything about Buchner? I hadn’t heard anything about Buchner, but that passage made me study the quote, Have you heard anything about Buchner? Because it’s not like a standard conversation about life.

Pete Sampson: I know it. After talking to people close to him, I learned he was qualified.

Tim O’Malley: Somehow he still had a year left.

Pete Sampson: Yeah, I don’t quite get it, but he has one year of eligibility.

Tim Priest: Just an appeal.

Tim O’Malley: So that’s it. Put it on the board, Jack Freeman. AI can now talk about Tyler Buchner.

Tim Priest: This is not without meaning.

Tim O’Malley: That’s why I mention it here.

Pete Sampson: That’s who I put in the game.

Tim O’Malley: This is someone I would include in the game as well. That’s why I asked this question. Let’s leave it at that.

Yes – here we go. Regardless, Buchner may be back.

I fully believe that if something had happened to CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey last year, Tyler Buchner would have been the name Marcus Freeman and Mike Denbrock were named. As things stand now, if Buchner is eligible to stay in South Bend for another year, I think they have to make that decision.

Obviously, not every fan wants this, seeing it as a hindrance to development. The thing I want to point out about this is how little C.J. Carr played as a true freshman, but he did pretty well. If disaster strikes, I’d rather see a veteran like Buchner take over than Notre Dame’s other current options.

how do you say?
