The Green Bay Packers have officially entered the offseason, and after losing to the Chicago Bears in the NFL playoffs, the big question remains: Where will head coach Matt LaFleur go from here?
LaFleur is reportedly under contract with the Packers until the end of the 2026 season, with no coaches, executives or players enjoying the security (or lack thereof) of a one-year deal.

Now that the Packers’ season is over, the organization and LaFleur will discuss a contract extension in the coming days, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. That could lock LaFleur in after the 2026 season, keeping the three-time NFC North champion coach in Green Bay for the foreseeable future.
But over time, the NFL’s plans changed. Will the wild-card loss against the Bears be LaFleur’s last with the Packers?
Here’s what the Packers head coach had to say about his job security after the loss:

Will the Packers fire Matt LaFleur?
LaFleur’s job security appears strong in the Packers’ wild-card round against the Bears, and the two sides will reportedly discuss a contract extension that would keep him in Green Bay beyond 2026.
Rapoport added that LaFleur will not “be his job coach” on Saturday night.
The head coach didn’t want to talk about his contract status or potential negotiations immediately after the loss to the Bears.
“Pete, with all due respect, this is not the time to ask that question,” LaFleur said. “I just feel bad for these people. I can only think about what just happened, and there will be time.”
LaFleur did not answer further questions about his job status or the team’s confidence in him, but said being the Packers’ head coach “means everything” to him.
If there’s any consolation for LaFleur, it’s that Packers president Ed Policy isn’t necessarily in favor of the coach entering the new season with an expiring contract.

“I’m generally against – I would never say never – [but] I’m generally opposed to coaches or general managers entering the last year of their contracts,” Policy said in June 2025. “That creates a lot of problems. I think usually, by the time you have two years left, you have a good idea of where the relationship is going – not always, but usually.
“So I think generally I would avoid ‘lame duck’ status. That’s often difficult for everyone involved. But there may be circumstances where it’s necessary, so I wouldn’t say never.”
Will the team’s position with LaFleur be one of those “certain circumstances”? Only time will tell.
