Wildcat Wrap: Arizona men’s tennis on 6-match winning streak

Editor’s note: With several sports underway, the Wildcat Wrap serves as a recap, focusing on programs in Arizona that we don’t have time to cover regularly but certainly deserve recognition.

It was only a matter of time before Arizona men’s tennis found its feet.

After a shaky start to the season, the Wildcats have won six straight games, including a sweep of rival Arizona State last weekend. No. 15 Arizona is 11-3 with conference play starting next week.

For the third consecutive year, Arizona won the Diablo Invitational in Tempe on Feb. 27-28, defeating Michigan State, UC Santa Barbara and Arizona State. UA defeated Michigan State at home on Tuesday.

Heading into the Diablo Invitational, Arizona fell out of the top 25 after losses to Oklahoma State, LSU and San Diego. Arizona State lost three games in the non-conference round, raising concerns that it only lost four games all season last season.

The Wildcats responded emphaticly, posting a 4-0 win over then-No. 11 Arizona State University.

All over the United States Jay Friend Rising to No. 3 in the ITA singles rankings. Friend’s singles record is 18 wins and 1 loss. Three other Wildcats national ranking: No. 63 Philip GustafsonNo. 72 Sasha Rozin and No. 99 Zoran Ludowski.

Arizona will open Big 12 play on the road against BYU on March 12 and Utah State on March 16.

track and field

Three Arizona State athletes have earned berths to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

male sprinter Mason LawyerWomen’s shot put Tapencia Javea high jump with women Emma Gates The game will be held March 13-14 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Javea won the Big 12 indoor shot put title, Loyer finished second in the 60 meters and third in the 100 meters and Gates finished fifth in the high jump.

All three athletes are seniors.

beach volleyball

The Wildcats beach volleyball team will travel to Tempe this weekend to compete in the Sun Devil Classic. Arizona plays Arizona State and Nebraska on Friday before taking on Southern Miss on Saturday.

Arizona (6-2) already has two ranked wins this season, beating No. 13 GCU and No. 19 Georgia State. The Wildcats will get another chance against ninth-ranked Arizona State after losing 5-0 to the Sun Devils at the Tucson Cactus Classic last weekend.

Reagan Holmer and Carly Cisneros As the first pair, the record is 5-3.

women’s golf

Arizona State strives for No. 14 this week at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Wildcats finished at 31 over, 29 strokes behind champion Texas.

Charlotte Baker Led the team into the top ten with a score of 1 over par. It was her third top-10 finish of the season.

Arizona will return to action next week at the GameAbove Invitational in Rolling Hills Estates, California.
