Colts legends Reggie Wayne and Frank Gore are among 11 players on this year’s ballot as finalists for the modern Pro Football Hall of Fame, but they won’t be wearing gold jackets during induction ceremonies this summer. Judging by the looks of potential first-time voting members next year, it’s likely these two will be out of the Hall for a while longer.
Longtime Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri — arguably the best kicker in NFL history — is one of five members of the class of 2026 who were voted on Thursday night during an NFL Honors ceremony. Other modern players in the class include Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly. Vinatieri and Kuechly were voted in in their second year of eligibility, and Brees and Fitzgerald joined the esteemed list of first-ballot Hall of Famers.

Gore joins Brees, Fitzgerald and longtime Cowboys tight end Jason Witten in his first year of Hall of Fame eligibility. Wayne, on the other hand, tied with star wide receiver Torrey Holt this year as the most finalists not elected to the Hall of Fame (seven times). Wayne has been a finalist every year of his seven years of eligibility.
But he’s still struggling to break the threshold — especially with the House’s new, more exclusive voting process. Under the new Pro Football Hall of Fame voting rules, the 25 (and tied) semifinalists are whittled down to 15 finalists each year, and then through subsequent rounds of voting, the group is whittled down to 10, then seven. The 50 voters of the Hall of Fame have five picks among the seven modern players. The top three players with the most votes will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. If they receive 80% of the votes, up to two more players can be added to the Hall of Fame.
Longtime Colts beat writer Mike Chappell, the Indianapolis-area representative on the Hall voting committee, lifted the lid on the voting process Thursday night. He said Wynn did not make the first cut from 15 to 10, meaning that, in the best-case scenario, he would still be the seventh-highest vote-getter next year, with Vinatieri, Brees, Fitzgerald and Kuechly all left off the list.
Chappell said Gore whittled the list down to 10, but he was not among the seven “ultimate” finalists who made it to the hall’s deciding vote. Bengals tackle Willie Anderson, Ravens edge rusher Terrell Suggs and Ravens offensive lineman Yanda Marshal, the three top seven players not selected in this year’s class, will automatically advance to become finalists in the 2027 class.

Chappelle said the initial field of finalists was whittled down from 15 to 10, including the seven mentioned above as well as Gore, Witten and Cowboys safety Darren Woodson.
Like Wynn, other Hall of Fame finalists who were bumped from 15 to 10 in the initial ballot include Saints linebacker Jarry Evans, Giants quarterback Eli Manning, Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams and Holt.
Wayne continues to wait despite sitting at 10th Ranks among NFL’s all-time receiving yards list (14,435 yards). Panthers’ only great Steve Smith Sr. (8th (14,731 yards all-time) ranks higher than him, but has not yet been elected to the Hall of Fame. Five other receivers (Andre Johnson, James Lofton, Chris Carter, Andre Reed and Steve Largent) are among the top 20 all-time in receiving yards and have also been elected to the Hall of Fame.

The Colts performed well and also ranked 11thth An all-time high in catches, and seven of the nine retired players ahead of him on the list are now voted into the Hall of Fame, with three others in the top 20 (Johnson, Isaac Bruce and Randy Moss). Wayne also ranked tied for 31stYingshi Most touchdown receptions in history.
A running back who ran like an iron man in the league for 16 years (15 of them in at least 14 games) with nine 1,000-yard seasons and 12 consecutive seasons with at least 800 yards (2006-2017), Gore ranked third in NFL career rushing yards in 2020 with 16,000 yards. Among active running backs, only Derrick Hundley (13,018 yards) and Saquon Barkley (8,356 yards) have rushed for 8,000 yards.
Those resumes next year will compete against a host of potential first-ballot members — most notably running back Adrian Peterson, tight end Rob Gronkowski, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, cornerback Richard Sherman and tackle Andrew Whitworth.
Peterson ranks fifth all-time in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Emmitt Smith tops both categories and is the only player to be in the top five of both lists.

Gronkowski ranks sixth all-time among tight ends in career receiving yards (9,286) — three of the five players before him have been voted into the Hall of Fame, the others being Witten and future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce. Gronkowski also sits 10thth He ranks first among tight ends in receptions (621) and third in touchdowns (92), and has four Super Bowl wins (tied for second-most among tight ends) and four first-team All-Pro selections (tied for second-most).
In his first year of Hall of Fame eligibility, Roethlisberger was seventh all-time in career passing yards (64,088) and ninth all-time in passing touchdowns (418). Of the nine other players who rank in the top 10 in both categories, four (Brees, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Dan Marino) have already been elected to the Hall of Fame, while Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford also appear to be inducted into the Hall of Fame when the time comes.
Players are still eligible for the “modern” Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot for 20 years after five seasons of retirement, meaning Wayne has 13 more chances to be inducted before he’s cast among a group of “senior” eligibles who go through an entirely different voting process. He now ranks second in career receiving yards (behind Smith) and receptions (behind Anquan Boldin) among Hall of Fame-eligible receivers who have yet to be voted on.
