Mikel Brown Jr. is on his way to becoming the first one-and-done player in Louisville basketball history.

Brown, a 6-foot-5 point guard from Orlando, Florida, wasted no time establishing himself as a lifeline for Pat Kelce’s fast-paced offense. Every learning moment the 19-year-old has had thus far as he adjusts to Division I football has revealed eye-popping potential.

Through his first 10 games with the Cardinals, Brown ranks second in scoring with 16.6 points per 27 minutes while shooting 38.1% from the field (26.8% from three-point range). He also added three rebounds and a team-high 5.1 assists while committing 2.4 turnovers — and his assist rate of 32.9 percent ranked in the top 60 nationally, according to KenPom.com.

Brown, who was scratched for the loss on Dec. 16, was ranked No. 1 in the world. 23 Tennessee due to lower back injury. However, during UofL’s non-conference schedule, he ranked in the 97th and 92nd percentiles nationally in points (20.5) and assists (4.3) compared to UofL’s other four major opponents, according to CBBAnalytics.com.

If Brown keeps up this pace, he will break Louisville’s record for most points in a season heading into the ACC Tournament. The high-water mark was 510 games — set in 39 games by the program’s first and only NBA draft pick, Pervis Ellison (1985-86).

“He’s that superstar — 8 million stars next to his name, his draft status and all that — you can work hard on this guy,” Kelce said after Brown had 16 points and three assists in a Dec. 13 win over Memphis. “… He said, ‘Yeah, coach — got it. You’re right.’ And then he came out at the end of the game and gave me a big hug and smiled.

As the calendar flips to 2026, where does Brown stand in the latest NBA Draft projections? Are there other cards in the mix? Here’s what talent evaluators have to say:

NBA Mock Draft: Where Does Louisville Basketball’s Mikel Brown Jr. Place in 2026 Projections?

Louisville Cardinals guard Mikel Brown Jr. (0) puts pressure on Kentucky Wildcats center Malachi Moreno (24) and makes two field goals during the rivalry between the two schools at KFC Yum! November 11, 2025, Louisville Center, Kentucky.

In the first mock draft of the 2025-26 season released by USA Today Sports (released on November 26), Brown was eliminated by the Atlanta Hawks with the No. 3 overall pick. The following is what NBA reporter Lorenzo Reyes said about this draft:

“If the Hawks choose to give up Trae Young at some point, Brown would be an ideal replacement. Brown is a point guard with good size and a very similar style to Young. He has excellent scoring instincts and range, and is not afraid of contact when getting to the free throw line.”

Recent mock drafts have Brown a little late. For example, as of December 18, SB Nation’s Ricky O’Donnell has him as the eighth overall pick to be drafted by the Dallas Mavericks.

See what other experts have to say:

Athletics: No. 5, Sacramento Kings (Dec. 4)

“Brown’s best flash is a top-five draft pick, and it helps that his best game came against Kentucky in front of a lot of scouts,” Sam Veceny wrote. “…Scouts like Brown’s combination of explosiveness around the rim with his skill level and ability to pass off the dribble on the spot. He needs to improve his efficiency around the rim, though.”

“You get the sense he could take over the game at any moment, though he’s struggled to keep his shot consistent so far,” Jonathan Wasserman wrote. “…He clearly has the ability to be explosive; his ballhandling and quickness help him earn uncontested layups, free throws and assists.

“Brown may turn off some scouts who don’t like his shot selection, but there are also those who believe he has more shooting fire than consistency.”

CBS Sports: No. 6, Sacramento Kings (Dec. 10)

“In this case, the best player ends up being the best player for the Kings, who desperately need point guard help,” Kyle Boone wrote. “Brown is a versatile guard who can score from anywhere and is calm and dynamic with the ball.”

ESPN: No. 5 (December 16)

“His ability to consistently create clean shots off the dribble creates exciting possibilities,” Jeremy Wu wrote. “Brown was viewed as a solid playmaker in high school, and scouts expect to see him create more opportunities for teammates in the half-court as the season progresses.

“To reinforce the perception of his dynamic shooting, Brown actually needs to take more shots — he’s shooting just 38.1 percent from the field. Many of his field goal attempts don’t always help. His lack of impact on defense is also an issue. But given the rarity and upside of his skill set, if Brown can put it all together, there’s a big upside.”

NBA Mock Draft: Are there any other Louisville basketball players on the board in 2026?

Louisville guard Ryan Conwell (3) during the basketball game between Tennessee and the University of Louisville at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center on December 16, 2025 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

As of Dec. 18, Ryan Conwell is the only Louisville player listed in the 2026 NBA mock draft.

The 6-foot-4 senior guard has scored 19.6 points on 42.3 percent shooting from the field (40.6 percent from 3-point range) in 11 games and has 4.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals in 27.8 minutes per game.

In ESPN’s Top 100 Rookies list released on December 16, Wu ranked Cornwell at No. 62. In a Bleacher Report mock draft released on the same day, Wasserman listed him as the Kings’ 34th overall pick.

“Ryan Cornwell is shooting over 40 percent from 3 for the third straight season, and he has the size and shooting skills to fill a shooting specialist role,” Wasserman wrote. “His catch-and-shoot numbers remain elite from his days at Xavier, but he also averaged 6.1 free throw attempts per game at Louisville.”

In a mock draft released by NBADraft.net on December 5, Cornwell was selected with the 59th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. Regardless, the site has Brown as the fourth overall pick — selected by the Indiana Pacers.
