Where does MSU football land in 138 rankings by CBS Sports?

Where do you think Michigan State ranks among every team in FBS college football? CBS Sports answered that question at the end of spring practice and looks ahead to the fall.

CBS Sports has released its latest 1-138 team rankings, which have Michigan State essentially in the middle of the pack in all of college football. The Spartans are ranked No. 66 overall, just in the top half of the sport.

Among Big Ten teams, Michigan State ranks near the bottom of the conference. Among the 18 teams in the Big Ten Conference, the Spartans are just ahead of Purdue, which is ranked No. 99 nationally. Wisconsin (No. 61) and Rutgers (No. 64) sit just a few spots ahead of the Spartans as the conference’s second-biggest rivals.

Michigan State enters the upcoming season under new head coach Pat Fitzgerald. The Spartans are in the midst of a four-year bowl drought and have a win total of 3.5 games in most sports this upcoming season. So it’s no surprise that CBS Sports ranks lower.

Michigan State will open the 2026 season on September 4 against Toledo. For reference, the Rockets are ranked No. 80 in the CBS Sports poll, so this could be a tougher season opener than some (myself included) expect.
