VANCOUVER, Canada (AP) — Shootings at a school and home in remote northern British Columbia have left 10 people dead.
Canadian authorities said a shooting at Tumbler Ridge High School on Tuesday left seven people dead and more than 25 injured. Two more people were found dead at a nearby house, and a woman who police believed to be the shooter was also found dead, apparently of a self-inflicted wound.
It was Canada’s worst shooting since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and set fires that killed nine others.

British Columbia Premier David Iby told reporters police arrived at the school within two minutes. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers found six people dead and more than 25 injured, including two in critical condition.
A seventh person died on the way to hospital, and two others were found dead at a home that authorities believe is connected to the attack. One suspect appeared to have died from a “self-inflicted wound.”
A video showed students walking out of the school with their hands up as police cars surrounded the building and a helicopter hovered overhead.

Tumbler Ridge is located in the Canadian Rockies, more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) northeast of Vancouver, near the border with Alberta, and has a population of 2,700. Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has 175 students in grades 7 to 12, according to the provincial government’s website.
Mayor Darryl Krakowka called the community a “big family.”
“I was devastated,” Krakowka said. “I’ve lived here for 18 years. I probably know every one of the victims.”

Investigators have identified a female suspect but have not yet released her name. They said the motive was unclear and police were still investigating the connection between the shooter and the victim.
PM’s response
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended planned visits to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Munich, Germany.
He said in social media posts that he was shocked by the shooting.
“I join Canadians in expressing condolences to those whose lives have been irreversibly changed today, and in expressing gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens,” he wrote.
Canada has strict gun laws
The Canadian government has introduced gun control measures in response to previous mass shootings. The country has banned the sale of more than 2,500 makes and models of assault-style firearms since May 2020, and in October 2022 imposed a nationwide freeze on the sale and purchase of handguns.
According to government officials, more than 12,000 assault weapons were seized and destroyed as part of a corporate compensation program implemented between November 2024 and April 2025. A similar program was launched last month for individuals, offering compensation to gun owners who voluntarily surrender banned weapons by March 31.
Those who do not participate have until the end of the amnesty period on October 30 to dispose of or permanently deactivate their prohibited firearms.
