Upstart shaft company Aretera is starting to make a name for itself with its first two shaft products, the EC1 and Alpha 1.
But its latest product, AO2, may help the company truly break through on the PGA Tour.

On GOLF’s “Fully Equipped,” co-host Johnny Wunder joined company co-founders Alex Dee and Chris Elson to discuss the new AO2 and why they expect it to become “the most widely adopted shaft on the PGA Tour.”
“It’s an overall profile type that’s more active at the handle and more solid in the midsection and tip, which has historically been very popular on tour,” Elson said. “We are integrating grid materials along with our coreless design (which is a continuation of the EC1) to enhance its touring stability. So it promises to be a more innovative, performance-based product than many other axles with a similar form factor.”

AO2 sets itself apart through intelligent design, fine craftsmanship and careful manufacturing. The AO2’s handle is active and solid mid-to-tip, translating top-notch engineering into shot repeatability. We understand how challenging it is to navigate the many variables between swing dynamics and in-game shaft profile. That’s why we strategically designed the only difference between the blue and gray outlines – clubhead stiffness – to streamline the process and adjust spin and launch to match a player’s swing type.

While this is a shaft for the typical PGA Tour player, one of the reasons for the EC1’s popularity is that it is suitable for golfers of all skill levels.
Elson expects that golfers of all speed types will find something to suit the AO2.
“This is not just a shaft profile that performs well for someone cruising 122 degrees. That’s why we also make a 45-gram version because we look at that profile type, and we tend to think about pairing the shaft profile with the type of swing,” he said. “We tend to see guys who are late-release, aggressive at the bottom of the swing, hold angle type of players, and those guys generally do well with that type of profile. That swing type doesn’t necessarily need to be a guy cruising at 122. You could have a guy that’s a little older, maybe a little longer, swings a little shorter, transitions faster but still holds angle.

“We’re going to market it as a tour-focused product because that’s what it is, but if someone with a slower swing speed has the right swing type, it can definitely work well.”
