West Virginia National Guard member killed in DC shooting laid to rest in ‘moving’ funeral

A West Virginia National Guard member who was fatally shot in the nation’s capital last month was buried with full military honors in a private ceremony.

Specification. Funeral services for Sarah Backstrom were held Tuesday at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton, Gov. Patrick Morrisey said in a statement.

“This ceremony was deeply moving and reflected the strength, grace and love of an extraordinary young woman and the family and friends who surrounded her,” Morrissey said.

Backstrom graduated with honors from Webster County High School in 2023 and enlisted in the National Guard a few weeks later. She served in the 863rd Military Police Company.

Backstrom and Staff Sgt. On November 26, Andrew Wolfe was ambushed while patrolling a subway station three blocks from the White House. She died the next day.

Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, who was also shot during the clashes, has been charged with murder. He pleads not guilty.

Morrissey said Wolfe remains in a Washington hospital and is slowly recovering, and his family expects he will remain in the intensive care unit for several more weeks.
