Wales release Ospreys pair for derby with Dragons

Wales fielded Ospreys half-back Reuben Morgan-Williams and a sluggish Gareth Thomas against the Dragons ahead of the Six Nations.

The pair will take part in the United Rugby Championship (URC) derby at Bridgend on Saturday (19:45 GMT) before returning to national team training camp.

Steve Tandy’s side begin their Six Nations clash with England in London on Saturday, February 7.

Wales have Tomos Williams and Kieran Hardy as well as Morgan Williams as scrum-half options, while Thomas battles for action with Nicky Smith and Reece Carre.

Morgan Williams has helped the Ospreys’ problems, signing Leinster half-back Cormac Foley on a short-term deal this week amid injuries to Luke Davies and Harry Williams.

Thomas, who played against New Zealand and South Africa in the autumn, has been out of action since early December due to a calf injury.

“Gareth is not a million miles away from being back,” Ospreys head coach Mark Jones said.

“Ourselves, Gareth and Steve all felt it would be good for him to get some minutes, so he will get some minutes this weekend.

“Ruben hasn’t played much due to a shoulder injury so Wales have given us the chance to get him on.

“They know us well enough to have rejoined and we look forward to their arrival.”

The pair will be at the brewery to cheer on the Ospreys while eight other Wales internationals will watch ahead of the Six Nations.

The home side were without center Owen Watkin, forward Dan Edwards, Hardy, hooker Dewi Lake, lock Rhys Davies and flanker Harry Dieves, while the Dragons were without number eight Aaron Wainwright and lock Ben Carter.

Rodney Parade’s side have won their last four games at Newport but suffered a painful 22-20 loss to Munster in Cork last weekend as they remain in pursuit of an elusive away win at URC.

They have not won away from home since defeating the Scarlets in April 2022, while their last league win outside Wales was at Connacht in October 2021.

The Dragons have only won twice against the Ospreys in the league – a 31-20 win at Bridgend in March 2021 and a 21-16 win at Swansea in October 2010.
